RESTORATIVE POST-OP INSTRUCTIONS
A new restoration has been specially custom made for your tooth. The latest technology has been used with the greatest care to craft the new restoration in your mouth. However, as with any new filling or crown, there may be some sensitivity. There are several possible sources of such sensitivity:
1. High Spot: The most common reason for post operative sensitivity is a high bite (high spot) on the newly restored tooth. Even though we check the bite with bite paper when the tooth is restored, anesthesia and numbness may make it difficult to bite normally. Luckily, this is easily adjusted by smooothing down the offending high spot.
2. Deep Decay or Fractures: Another common reason for post operative sensitivity is trauma to the tooth. This can be from decay, fractures, and possible nerve damage. The deeper the decay or fracture (that is, the closer to the pulp (nerve)), the longer it can take to heal.
3. Restorative Materials: Some of the materials used to restore and rebuild your tooth can cause sensitivity. In almost every case I treat, I seal the tooth with a bonding resin which helps minimize most of this type of sensitivity.
4. Injections: Injections, particularly on the lower jaw can create muscle pain for a couple of days. This can be worse for people who grind or exhibit TMJ symptoms. Usually soft diet and antiinflammatory drugs alleviate such discomfort. In addition, moist hot compresses help.
IF YOU HAVE ANY SYMPTOMS WHICH LINGER MORE THAN A WEEK AFTER YOUR NEW RESTORATION HAS BEEN PLACED, PLEASE CALL THE OFFICE SO WE MAY EVALUATE THE CAUSE AND TRY TO ELIMINATE YOUR DISCOMOFORT. PERSISTENT PAIN COULD INDICATE POTENTIAL ROOT CANAL.
IF YOU HAVE ANY UNUSUAL SYMPTOMS OR QUESTIONS, PLEASE CALL THE OFFICE AT 973.379.2730 OR MY CELL AT 201.323.0215. IF I AM NOT IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE LEAVE YOUR NAME AND TELEPHONE NUMBER AND I WILL BE IN TOUCH WITH YOU AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
