ORAL SURGERY POST-OP INSTRUCTIONS
1. REST: It is advised to avoid any exercise or strenuous activity for at least three days; normal activity may be resumed after that
2. BLEEDING: Gauze or surgical packing was placed over the operated area; keep firm pressure on the gauze and change it every hour. PLEASE CALL THE OFFICE IF HEAVY BLEEDING CONTINUES TO OCCUR.
3. FOOD: Avoid hot foods (in temperature and spiciness) for the first twenty four hours. A light diet is recommended. Drink plenty of fluids.
4. SMOKING: No smoking for at least 8 hours, preferrably the rest of the day. Smoking interferes with the healing process and could prevent proper healing.
5. HYGIENE: Avoid rinsing your mouth for the remainder of the day. You may lightly brush teeth away from the surgical site the following day. Thereafter, gently brush the entire mouth; do not be alarmed by slight bleeding.
6. MEDICATION: Take the prescribed medication as directed for infection or discomfort. If an antibiotic was prescribed, make sure you continue to use up the entire prescribed amount (even if everything feels fine). Pain medication may be taken as needed and directed.
7. SWELLING: Slight swelling may occur; to minimize, use ice packs for the first 24 hours using the following regimen: 20 minutes on the treated area of the face, 20 minutes off. If swelling continues to increase in size, call the office.
8. SUTURES: Sutures (stitches) should be removed in approximatley 1-2 weeks. If a suture has come out earlier, please call the office.
9. SPLINTERS: Little splinters of bone may work their way out; this can be normal.
