ENDODONTIC POST-OP INSTRUCTIONS
1. DISCOMFORT: Slight discomfort is to be expected after any treatment visit. This can arise from the injection, infection, the treatment procedure, and even from keeping your mouth open wide for extended periods. Sometimes, slight adjustments in the bite of the tooth must be made to alleviate continued discomfort.
2. MEDICATIONS: Take the prescribed analgesic for pain as directed and needed. If anitibiotics have been prescribed, continue until the prescription is entirely used (usually about ten days worth). This is very important!
3. HYGIENE: Brush as usual. Be careful flossing if your tooth has a temporary filling as you do not want to dislodge it; floss towards the gums, then pull the floss out sideways.
4. DIET: You may want to eat softer foods for the first day following any treatment visit. Avoid hard food substances that may crack the tooth (e.g. rock candy, steak bones, etc.)
5. SWELLING: Tenderness may be experienced in the gums where the tooth has been treated. IF SWELLING BECOMES VISIBLY PRONOUNCED, CALL THE OFFICE.
6. RESTORATION: Once the root canal has been completed, the tooth still needs to be protected against fracturing by either a crown, or where applicable, an onlay. Post and core build ups are frequently needed in the root canaled tooth prior to crown fabrication.
