Several new medications have emerged which can shorten, and in some cases eliminate cold sores (also known as fever blisters). Cold sores are viral in nature, and distinctly different from canker sores (apthous ulcers). Because cold sores are viral, new antiviral medications are now available (but these will not work on canker sores). Medication can be in pill form, cream form, or liquid. While the over-the-counter medication Abreva yields 30% improvement, prescription Zovirax and Denavir can prevent the cold sore from erupting in the prodromal stage (when a person first feels the tingling or burning). Most recently, Viroxyn has entered the market, and reports it can cut down the burning stage from six days to one hour!
If you suffer from cold sores, suffer no longer. Ask Dr. Schonberg which medication would best be suited for you.
